A departure from the political and social musings.
I watched the game in Green Bay last night and... zzzzzzzzzz
Oh, excuse me I fell asleep again just thinking about that game. What a boring, anti-climatic game. What could be worse? Try the Super Bowl this year. Unfortunately, I think the fans have already seen the best games of the season, and this one is going to be a big bore of a game.
I do have a complaint though, and it makes me wonder about whether I want to watch pro football anymore. Years ago I stopped watching pro basketball when it was very clear that there would never a championship in towns like Sacramento or Salt Lake City because the market size is too small. Yes, I am advocating that the league, through the refs guide games and championships. Well, I see this again with pro football. I saw a number of games this year that were decided by questionable calls, that turned the tide of the game. My position on this is, if a flag turns the tide there needs to be no question that it is called for.
College football has its problems too. I saw a couple of inter-conference games that I really had to wonder if the officials had an agenda. Holding is holding, but should be called both ways when it happens. I saw a game between UCLA and BYU this summer where a DB nearly took the receiver to the turf on a pass with no interference call, but when a BYU player bumped the UCLA receiver the PAC-10 ref threw his flag from about 30 yds away.
In today's world of technology I think it is possible to improve our officiating to remove the 12th man (ref in this case) from influencing the game. Did he step on the line? Let's put sensors on the lines to know when they get stepped on. Did the ball cross the plane? Let's put a small sensor in the ball. The refs should get first call, but if there is even a hint of doubt, go to the technology and see what it says.
And for pass interference calls I think they should be reviewed by a booth official. I have seen to many of these calls turn a game around.
Oh, and the final thing, especially for the pros, I say we make completely blown calls public. We report all of the negatives that the players commit from penalties to dropped balls. Let's report how bad a ref's calls are through the year with penalties to face.
Let the players play, and ensure a fair playing field. Not even, just fair. I do believe that the Pats are the best team this year, but I don't have to like them.
